Firstly, I would like to thank the committee of National Birmingham Dog Show for the honour of inviting me to judge Staffordshire Bull Terriers at this prestigious show. It was an appointment I was truly delighted to accept, especially given the historical significance this show holds for our breed, being the place where Staffordshire Bull Terriers were first awarded Challenge Certificates back in 1935. That connection made this appointment feel all the more special for me.

My sincere thanks also go to all the exhibitors for their entry and for accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner throughout the day, which is very much appreciated.

As is often the case when judging, there is little time to take much in around the ring, but I certainly felt the warm and friendly atmosphere throughout the day. It was lovely to hear the applause when the CC and Reserve CC winners were awarded, which added to the occasion. I hope that this will be the same for every show, as it’s like celebrating our magnificient breed.

I was also very fortunate to have two wonderful stewards in Elaine and Tec Norton. Not only did they ensure the day ran smoothly from start to finish with their efficiency, experience, and calm approach, allowing me to concentrate fully on the dogs, but both have also more than earned their place within our breed through their own many years of dedication and contribution to Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Their support was greatly appreciated, and I would like to thank them both most sincerely.

None of the exhibits showed breathing issues, and only a small number with minor bite faults. In my opinion, the overall quality in the bitch classes was stronger than in the dog classes.

This was an appointment I felt very honoured to undertake and one I shall remember with great pleasure.

Red with white chest. Well developed and balanced throughout. Deep through head with a well defined skull and distinct stop. Neat rose ears. Well set eyes of correct size and shape with attractive pigmentation. Well developed cheek muscles. Good width in front with a well developed forechest. Straight, well boned legs with strong pasterns. Well sprung ribs, correct topline. Well angulated, muscular hindquarters with hocks well let down. Moved soundly.

2nd: MCCAFFERTY, Mrs Kimberley & MCCAFFERTY, Mr Andrew Wonderstaff This Boy

Black brindle. Well proportioned head with distinct stop, correct rose ears, and well developed cheek muscles. Eyes well placed. Straight, well boned legs. Well sprung ribs and brisket of correct depth. Well angulated hindquarters and correct tailset. I preferred the width in front from the first in this class.

Class Minor Puppy Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 0

White puppy, already well developed for age. Well proportioned head with distinct stop, well set ears, and correctly placed eyes. Bite tight. Short neck. Good forechest. Straight, well boned legs, though a little loose in elbow, which also showed on the move. Short compact body, well sprung ribs, brisket of correct depth. Well angulated hindquarters, correct tailset, and hocks well let down.

2nd: GOUGH, Miss Clare Louise Jackstaff The Patriot

Attractive red and white puppy who unfortunately was not fully settled on the day, making complete assessment difficult despite his handler’s efforts. From what could be assessed without causing additional stress, he showed a lovely well developed head, good width in front, straight well boned legs, and well sprung ribs. A puppy to watch when more confident.

Classy brindle and white puppy. Well proportioned clean head with distinct stop. Well placed and shaped eyes, neat rose ears, and well developed cheek muscles contributing to keen expression. Short muscular neck gradually widening into well laid shoulders. Good forechest and correct width in front. Straight, well boned legs with strong pasterns. Slightly longer in body at present and ribbing still to mature. Correct depth of brisket. Well angulated hindquarters with hocks well let down. Presented in lovely condition, kept his topline on the move, carrying his tail correctly.

2nd: LEWIS, Mr Derek Bethaleese There A Light For Inkastaff

Young brindle dog with a lovely expression. Deep through head with well developed skull, distinct stop, and good cheek development. Neat rose ears and well placed eyes. Muscular neck. Correct body shape with well sprung ribs and correct depth of brisket. Straight well boned legs, strong pasterns, and well padded feet. Well angulated hindquarters. Just preferred the length of muzzle of the winner.

Red and white with a well developed, clean, well proportioned head. Distinct stop, clean lips, correct bite, and strong underjaw. Well developed forechest. Would prefer tighter elbows to the body. Correct spring of rib and tuck-up. Straight, well boned legs, strong pasterns, and strong well padded feet. Well developed muscular hindquarters, hocks well let down, and correct tailset.

Straight, well boned legs with strong pasterns, his feet turn out correct. Well sprung ribs, ample depth of brisket, good tuck-up, and correct bend of stifle.

Red with white and attractive dark mask. Well developed deep through head with distinct stop, neat rose ears, and dark well shaped eyes of correct size. Open nostrils. Well muscled hindquarters with hocks well let down. Just preferred the shoulder placement of the winner.

White with brindle patch, clean in outline. Well shaped head with correct proportions and distinct stop. Neat well placed rose ears and dark well shaped eyes. Clean lips and correct dentition. Muscular neck of correct length. Straight legs with strong pasterns. Well sprung ribs, good tuck-up, and well muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles and hocks well let down. I preferred the lay of shoulders of the first in this class.

Well proportioned and shaped body with ample depth of brisket and well spring ribs. Correct tailset.

Well built, brindle dog with a well proportioned, deeptrough head with a distinct stop. Well placed, neat rose ears. Well set eyes which I prefer bit bigger. Correct bite. Neck of correct length which gradually widens towards well laid shoulders. Good width in front.

Well boned straight legs, strong pasterns and well padded, tight feet. Good correct depth of brisket. Well angulated hindquarters with a correct tailset.

Class Limit Dog (14 Entries) Abs: 2

This attractive, red with white markings dog has correct balance of strength and agility.

A well proportioned and shaped head with well placed neat rose ears and distinct stop.

Medium sized and round eyes which are well set. Open nostrils.

Well developed cheekmuscles, clean lips and a strong underjaw. Correct bite. Neck of correct length which gradually widens towards well laid shoulders. Correct forechest with good width in front accentuated by his markings. Straight, well boned legs, strong pasterns and his white coloured feet are tight and well padded. Well shaped body with well sprung ribs. Brisket of correct depth and correct length. Strong, well muscled and correct angulated hindquarters. Hocks well let down. Presented in excellent condition and worked well with his handler. Moved with drive and in the line up he stood four foot square oozing attitude. There was no way I could have missed him for the CC.

Well shaped body with good spring of ribs and correct depth of brisket, light in loins. Well bent stifles, moved with drive. Presented in lovely condition.

Close decision between first and second in this class. Red with white dog with an attractive expression. Well shaped and proportioned head with distinct stop. Correct placed neat rose ears. Wel set and shaped eyes. Well developed cheek muscles, clean lips and correct bite. Open nostrils. Correct width in front emphasized by the white markings. Straight, well boned legs. Strong pasterns and tight, well padded feet. Muscular, clean in outline, neck, of correct length gradually widening towards well laid shoulders. Well sprung ribs and correct depth and length of brisket. Correct tuck up.

Well muscled hind quarters, hocks well let down. Moved with drive and well presented, just as the first in this class in wonderfull condition.

Class Veteran Dog (1 Entries) Abs: 0

I judged this dog some years ago, 2021 to be exact. He won open class but in the line-up he didn’t convince me to award him the CC or reserve CC then. How different that was today. I can repeat the critique from the 2021 show:” Black brindle with a well proportioned head with a distinct stop. Well developed cheek muscles. Strong underjaw with correct bite. Straight, well boned legs. Strong pasterns and he stands on strong feet. Well laid shoulders. Neat rose ears and well set and shaped eyes. Deep brisket, well sprung ribs. Well proportioned body. Level topline which he also kept on the move. One of the best movers of the day. Well muscled, correct angulated hindquarters. Presented in wonderfull condition and handled expertly”. Adding that what I missed then was present in abdunce on the day, the sparkle and the look-at-me attitude. True Stafford spirit which couldn’t be overlooked. This veteran remains a wonderful ambassador for the breed as he proved in the veteran group this show and a show later winning this group. Like a good wine.

It will be just a matter of time that she’ll have her crown!

Clean, tight lips. You would think she’s undershot but she just has a exemplary strong underjaw. Correct bite. Muscular neck of correct length gradually widening towards well laid shoulders. Correct width in front.

Well boned and straight legs. Strong pasterns and tight well padded feet. Compact, close coupled well shaped body with brisket of correct depth and length. Well sprung ribs. Well angulated, muscled hindquarters. Moved with drive. Just preferred the expression of number one in this class when placing them.

Eyes, well shaped and sized, set to look straight ahead.Well developed cheekmuscles. Clean tight lips. Muscular neck of correct length gradually widening towards well laid shoulders. Good width in front. Straight and well boned legs and strong pasterns. Tight, well padded feet. Well shaped body, well sprung ribs and brisket of correct depth. Good tuck up. Well muscled hindquarters and good tailset. Moved very well. This was a lovely class.
