Breed Notes 2026

SBT Breed Notes w/c 1st June 2026

Hello Again!  Well, it’s June already and what lovely weather we have been having.  I hope you and your Staffords have managed to keep cool over the last couple of weeks.

Some sad news to bring you that was posted on Social Media on Sunday 31st May:

It is with great sadness we have to inform you that Norman Berry died unexpectedly but peacefully, yesterday morning at the grand age of 93.

We have chosen to pay tribute to him on his own Facebook page as it always gave him immense pleasure to spend his time connecting with his friends on Facebook; the friends that he has made through Staffords, over 60 years and all around the world. In particular he loved to read all the lovely comments he received on his posts over the years and he would tell us all about them and was so touched and proud.

We will let you all know the funeral arrangements in due course.

Susan, Rachel, Russ and Phil

I am sure you will all have your own thoughts and memories of Norman, as I do myself.  I know that Susan and the family are taking great comfort from the messages that are being posted on this announcement on Norman’s own Facebook page so if you have not already done so, please take a moment to share a few words with the family in this way – it will be very much appreciated.

For those of you who do not have Social Media, I am sure you will join me in sending sincere condolences to the family and hope that, in time, they can take comfort from knowing how loved and respected he was all around the world by his “Stafford Family”.  Rest In Peace – reunited with his beloved Dorothy.

On Sunday 7th June Northern Counties SBTC will be holding their 2nd Open Show of the year at Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall near Selby, YO8 9PA.  Dave McKimm is judging on the day with the show opening at 10am with judging starting at 10.30am with Baby Puppy Class first in the ring.

Finally, I have had an update from Lesley McFadyen of East Anglian SBTC to share with you all:

Hope you are all well and enjoying the weather if you have the sunshine currently - keep cool!

The RKC have created an information pack regarding the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme. It explains the background to testing, and answers lots of questions. It can be found on most Breed Club websites and also on the SBT Health Facebook page as well as on the RKC website.  Please have a read through.

At a recent meeting held with the RKC it was agreed that the (RFGS) scheme will not be added to the Breed Health Standard until a full additional year of data is available for consideration. The position will be reviewed again around June 2027. Prevalence is likely to be the deciding factor: if under 1% of SBTs tested are shown as clinically affected it will not be included. If the current scenario remains—that over 1% but under 10% are clinically affected—it would be added to Best Practice, and if over 10% are affected, it would be added to Good Practice recommendations

EASBTC will hold a testing session at our Championship Show on 4th July 2026 at Spalding. It will be run by Jane Ladlow and possibly also Fran Tomlinson at a cost of £35 per dog. If you would like to book a slot please contact Gem Rowe email: gemmalrowe@btinternet.com

If you are planning on coming along to our Joyce Shorrock Memorial Championship Show on 4th July at Springfields Events Centre PE12 6ET  this is a reminder that entries close on 17th June. There won't be any extension so get them in now and you can relax knowing you haven't missed out on a great day, enjoying the company of Staffords, watching two great judges, having the option to take the Bronze Good Citizen Award, getting a chance to win a £50 voucher in our member exhibitor draw on the day and all while remembering a wonderful lady, without whom the Club wouldn't exist!

Another gentle reminder about our Breed Appreciation Day on 27th June - spaces are still available.  Please contact myself – easbtclub@gmail.com or Jay Rogers – emsbtcsec@yahoo.com .

Lesley x

Thank you Lesley, all great stuff going on at your Club.

That’s about it for this week, take care.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 25th May 2026

Hello Again!  Well, that’s another Bank Holiday weekend been and gone and another “Triple Header” under our belts!  However, due to submission deadlines, I am unable to bring you the results from Bath, Morecambe Bay & Cumbria SBTC and Merseyside SBTC this week – you will just have to wait for next week with a bumper set of results!!

This coming weekend we have Southern Counties Canine Association taking place at Newbury Showground, Thatcham, RG18 9QZ on Saturday 30th May where Clare Ryan (Rubericla) will be awarding CC’s for the first time.  Staffords are in Ring No. 22 which is located in or near Tent 3 and judging starts at 9.30am with Veteran Dog in the ring first.  Clare has 38 dogs, making 42 entries, and 45 bitches making 47 entries giving overall totals of 83 exhibits making 89 entries.  Good luck and safe travels to everyone showing and hope you enjoy your day Clare.

On Sunday 31st May, Southern Counties SBTS hold their second Open Show of the year where Kerry Daly (Boscador) is judging the main classes and Simon Green (Cocostaff) is judging the Special Awards Classes.  The show takes place at Navestock Village Hall, Brentwood, Essex, CM14 5SD with the show opening at 9.00am and judging starting at 10.00am prompt.  First in the ring will be Veteran Dog and the SAC’s will be judged during the lunchbreak.  Hope everyone – judges, exhibitors, spectators and the Officers and Committee all have a fabulous day.

On a more sombre note, last week I was sad to learn of the passing of George Earle.  George held the well-known “Judael” affix and he owned and or bred several top winning dogs, including champions.  I am sure you will join me in passing on sincere condolences to the family at this difficult time.

Finally, a few weeks ago I mentioned that the East Anglian SBTC had held an informal “Open Discussion Day” on 26thApril where everyone was invited to meet up, have a bite to eat and listen to a few invited speakers to chat on various topics.  The event was held at Lakenheath Pavilion, which was a lovely venue no doubt helped by the fact that the day was warm, sunny and dry.  The event was very well attended and the speakers were very well received.

First up was Jenny from Wren Canine Hydrotherapy who gave an insight into the various activities that your dog can become involved in for health, fitness, rehabilitation or just for fun.  She talked about the process of gradually introducing the dog to the pool or, in some cases, getting the dog just to walk gently on a treadmill in a hydrotherapy tank.  Any dog can attend sessions, though Jenny did highlight that any new attendee would need to be signed off by their own vet before they can attend.

Jenny then went on to talk about doggy first aid and “Romeo” was a very patient participant, along with his “Mom” – Lynda.  Jenny talked about having a basic first aid kit to hand at all times and gave some great information as to what the kit should consist of.  She also explained how and what to do in a “first aid” situation and then went on to demonstrate how to correctly bandage a cut ear, which Romeo modelled beautifully!

I then gave a talk on Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI).  These are two different “activities” that are carried out between Day 3 and Day 16 of a newborn puppy’s life.  Basically, ENS are 5 different minor “stressors” that help to stimulate the puppies neurological senses, giving them a much more confident, balanced and calm approach to different situations in adulthood.  ESI is slightly different in that the puppy is introduced to different “scents” – just one a day for a few seconds – which again helps with their development, particularly if they may go on to work with scents and smells in adulthood.  If anyone would like to know a bit more, by all means get in touch with me at the email address below and I will be happy to point you in the direction of the science behind it or just chat about the activities more generally.

Next up was Tina Williams with “Binky”.  Tina is a Member of the EASBTC Display Team but she is also a professional Dog Trainer.  Tina shared her knowledge and experience of various dog activities, including agility, obedience, basic training and barn hunt.  Tina also got Binky to demonstrate her scent work expertise which, as a puppy of just under 5 months old, was really incredible.  In fact, Binky was bred by us and we did go through ENS and ESI with her, so she had had the right stimulation from a very young age.  It was really interesting to learn from Tina that in her experience as a dog owner, handler and trainer, Binky was probably the calmest, most obedient puppy she had known and that her ability to learn new things and undertake scent work were probably the best she had ever known!  She was so enthusiastic about the benefits of ENS and ESI that another speaker, Sian Hammond, said she would give it a try with her forthcoming litter – good luck Sian!

Speaking of Sian, she then gave a super talk all about nutrition, raw feeding versus kibble and also dispelled a few myths about food poisoning!  It made sense when she explained that canine grade “meat” has to be as rigorously tested, even more so really, because meat intended for humans will be cooked whereas canine meat will be served raw. Obviously, good food hygiene practice is essential whether you are handling raw meat for your own consumption or your dogs consumption.  Sian also talked about how sensitive dogs may benefit from a raw diet just by taking out everything except for one food source, such as chicken, and then gradually reintroducing  other foods, such as lamb, to see how the dogs system reacts.  Sian explained that most dogs are absolutely fine once the trigger foods have been eliminated from their diet.

Finally, Gem – the Lead Breed Health Coordinator – gave a talk on all things health-related, answering questions about elbow scoring and hip scoring and the process involved with getting this done by an approved veterinarian.  Gem also talked about the recent RKC initiatives around BOAS and the Respiratory Function Grading System (RFGS) that is in the news at the moment.  Gem, as always, gave a very informative and professional talk which I would encourage you all to get to experience if you can.  Speaking of which, Gem is presenting at the BAD being held by East Anglian SBTC and East Midlands SBTC on 27th June – more details below – so get along and have a chat with Gem about anything to do with health.

Lunch was superb and everyone seemed to have a fantastic day – I certainly did!  I hope the Club do something like this again soon – and I would encourage all of our other Clubs to consider doing something similar.

East Anglian SBTC are jointly holding a Breed Appreciation Day with East Midlands SBTC.  This is taking place on Saturday 27th June at Normanton-on-Soar Village Hall, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE12 5HB.  Speakers for the day are Gary and Alison Hinsley and Gem Rowe.  The Multiple Choice Exam will also be taking place and if you meet the criteria to take the exam as part of your JEP judges progress, then this could be a great opportunity for you.  If you need any further information or you need to book your place, please contact Lesley McFadyen (easbtclub@gmail.com) or Jay Rogers ( emsbtcsec@yahoo.com ) as soon as possible.

That’s about all for this week, have a great week!

SBT Breed Notes w/c 18th May 2026.

Hello Again!  I hope you have had a good week.

Last weekend saw us all make the trip to “Bonnie Scotland” with both SKC Champ shows taking place on Friday 15thMay at the Royal Highland Showground, Ingliston.  Our rings were located in the “Central Hall” – the “hall” between the “Highland” and “Lowland” Halls.  To say it was freezing in there is an understatement!  With two or three massive doors open all day, the wind was blowing right through the hall and, despite my lovely Scottish friends telling me it was a Scottish summers day, quite frankly, I am not so sure!  The lighting was not great and the whole roof was full of nesting birds and pigeons which were flying around throughout the day, doing what birds do and dropping their “excess baggage” whenever and wherever nature called.  Let’s hope SKC have a rethink on where they locate the Top Terrier entry exhibitors next year!

Anyway, on to the results.  Judging began at 8.30am in both rings with Jayne Winrow (Jayneze) starting with dogs.  Jayne was judging the “All Breeds” Champ show and she had an entry of 44 dogs making 56 entries and 71 bitches making 81 entries giving a total of 115 exhibits making a total of 137 entries.  Jayne’s main winners were as follows:

Well done everyone.

The following day we all moved on to the Scottish Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club and their Championship show which was held at Lawrie & Symmington Agricultural Centre, Lanark.  This venue was much warmer and much brighter than SKC with excellent catering facilities at very reasonable prices.  The rings were both of good size and though there were no mats to move the dogs on, the floor did not appear to be slippy from what I saw of the movement of the dogs on the whole.  Judging this show was Paul Stanway (Waystaff) who was judging dogs and Gail Ross (Mumiah) who was awarding her first set of CC’s to the bitches.  Paul had an entry of 61 dogs making 62 entries and Gail had an entry of 79 making 84 entries.  The referee was Frank McCann (Albastaff) who was required to make the BEST IN SHOW and RESERVE BEST IN SHOW decisions – both going to the dogs on this occasion.  The main winners were:

SBT Breed Notes w/c 11th May 2026

Hello Again! I hope you have had a good week and that you are making the most of the longer days and lighter evenings.

Last time I brought you the results from WELKS on Friday 24th April.  The next Champ Show was Birmingham National, which was held on Friday 8th May at Stafford County Showground.  This is always a lovely show with green carpeting in all rings and white picket fencing surrounding each one.  There was no benching but areas for crates and grooming were clearly taped off with good sized “gangways” around the rings and to get around the showground easily.  There were lots of stalls and traders – both inside and out – making for an excellent day out.

Our judge for the day was Bianca Janssen and she had 137 dogs making 149 entries and from these entries, her main winners were as follows:

DCC – BULLBROTHERS MONTECRISTO 01.11.2023 (Pridesdale The Mean Machine x Marstaff Unforgiven)

RDCC – CH JACKSTAFF MADE A BOY FOR ALBERMARBULL 29.05.2023 (Vergarastaff White Bear Chezatree (IMP ESP) x Jackstaff Fire Opal)

BVD & BVIB – CH CATSTAFF’S USED TO 03.04.2019 (Catstaff’s Firefly x CH Catstaff’s Extraordenary).  Batman then went on to take Terrier Veteran Group 3 under judge Mr J Liimatainen from Finland!  Well done Dave Manito and Batman!

On Sunday 10th May the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club held their first Open Show of the year at Wednesbury Leisure Centre.  Judge for the day was Natalie Moorcroft (Moorstar) and she had an entry of 58 exhibits, from which her main winners were:

Well done all.

This coming weekend we have a “Triple Header” kicking off with the two Scottish Kennel Club Champ shows taking place at the Royal Highland Showground, Ingliston, Edinburgh on Friday 15th May.  They will both be taking place in the Central Hall, which is the hall in between the two main halls where the trade stands are situated.  Both shows will commence judging at 8.30am with Jayne Winrow starting with dogs in Ring 16 and Jantsje Vd Meer starting with bitches in Ring 18.  Jayne and Jantsje have agreed that they themselves will swap rings following completion of the first sex classes so that ALL dogs are judged in Ring 16 and ALL bitches are judged in Ring 18 – sensible idea Ladies – well done to you two!

Jayne has 44 dogs and 77 bitches totalling 115, making 137 entries and Minor Puppy Dog will be in the ring first.

Jantsje has 44 dogs and 63 bitches totalling 107, making 126 entries and Minor Puppy Bitch will be in the ring first.

On Saturday 16th May the Scottish Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club hold their Champ show at Lawrie & Symington Agricultural Centre, Lanark where Paul Stanway (Waystaff) will be judging dogs and Gail Ross (Mumiah) will be judging bitches with Frank McCann (Albastaff) as referee, if needed.  The show opens at 9am with judging starting at 10am prompt in both rings with the Minor Puppy’s kicking things off.

Good luck to everyone showing at any of these shows and safe travels to everyone going.

The following week, on Friday 22nd May, Bath Champ show takes place at Bannerdown.  This is a super venue with lovely rings but the weather can be a bit extreme – either sunny and hot where you get sunburn or freezing cold, wet and windy where you get wind burn!  Our judge for the day is Lee Page (Karwillage) and he has an entry of 40 dogs and 42 bitches totalling 82 making 93 entries in total.  Judging starts at 9am with Veteran Dog in the ring first.

Entries closing shortly are:

Southern Counties SBTS Open show closes online on Sunday 17th May.  The show takes place on Sunday 31st May at Navestock Village Hall with Kerry Daly (Boscador) judging.

Windsor Champ show closes on Wednesday 20th May.  The show takes place on Thursday 25th June at Home Park, Windsor with Sian Hammond (Hammystaff) judging.

Boston & District CS Champ Show closes on Monday 25th May.  The show takes place on Sunday 5th July at Rutland Showground, Oakham with Kelly Wilson (Northstaff) judging.

North East SBTC Open show closes on Monday 25th May.  The show takes place on Saturday 13th June at West Cornforth Community Centre, West Cornforth with Cally Seymour (Dekayro).

Finally some very sad news.  Last week Patrick Enfield, known by so many of us as Paddy, sadly passed away.  Paddy was a big man with a big heart that absolutely loved our Breed.  He exhibited lightly under his “Pitstar” affix but was a regular at many shows.  He produced some quality leather goods, which I am proud to say I have several lead and collar sets from a little while ago.  He was a real character who I enjoyed having a chat and a laugh with, as I am sure many of you also did.  But Paddy always stood up for what he thought was right and was fair and he was honest to a fault.  He served on the Committee of the SBTC and undertook the role of Vice Chair for a while, fulfilling the role in his usual straight-forward, “say it as it is” style.  He will be truly missed by me and, I am sure, many of you too.  I am sure you will join me in passing on sincere condolences to Denise and the family.

The funeral service is being held on Thursday 21st May at 1.00pm at Woodlands Crematorium, Woodlands Lane, Birmingham, B46 1 DP.  The wake reception will be held afterwards at Coleshill Social Club, Ivy Lodge, Parkfield Road, Coleshill, Birmingham, B46 3BJ.  Smart dress kindly requested and all who knew Paddy are warmly welcome.

Donations in Paddy’s memory can be made to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Heritage Centre:

Forever loved, deeply missed.

An online Teams Meeting was held on Wednesday 15th April, hosted by Hannah James and Fern McDonnell from the Royal Kennel Club, along with Gem Rowe – Lead Breed Health Co-Ordinator for our Breed.  The meeting was about the RKC and University of Cambridge’s Respiratory Function Grading Scheme and its expansion and availability specifically in relation to Staffords.  The purpose of the call was for representatives of our Breed Clubs to share feedback from their Members about the introduction of the RFGS to our breed and also to ask any questions and seek clarity from the RKC about the scheme following the publication .  The only Clubs represented were East Anglian, East Midlands, North of Scotland, Northern Counties, Notts and Derby and Southern Counties.  It is disappointing that only 6 of our Clubs were represented.  I know there were other Clubs invited who did not join the call, which is disappointing.  However, I expect that Hannah and Fern, via Gem, will either share the recording or will share the salient points discussed.

Much of the discussion was about the process of the scheme, its uniformity and consistent replication when undertaken by different assessors and in differing conditions.  Hannah and Fern explained the process in detail and also clarified the training that all RKC assessors for RFGS undergo, all of which went some way to reassuring the attendees that the scheme is robust and results are consistent regardless of who the assessor is or the conditions under which the assessments are carried out.  There is a lot of information about the RFGS on the RKC website, which you can find here:

www.royalkennelclub.com/health-and-dog-care/health-dog-care/health/getting-started-with-health-testing-and-screening/respiratory-function-grading-scheme/

Looking at this information, one of the key points that I noted is:

“The way that BOAS is inherited is not fully understood and is not always entirely predictable. Using the guidelines (below) can help you reduce the chances of breeding puppies affected by BOAS. However, even if used responsibly, this guidance cannot guarantee that a puppy from two unaffected parents will be free from BOAS.”

Also, during the call, Hannah and Fern explained that the introduction of the RFGS for our Breed is not currently mandatory or “Best Practice” or even “Good Practice”.  The Scheme is still in its introductory phase for our Breed and though the Scheme is available to Staffords to be tested, “we” – as a Breed – could request the “data gathering” period to be extended by a further 12 months before any decisions are made as to whether the RFGS is introduced as a requirement of “Good” or “Best” Practice when breeding.  The general consensus on the call was that no one on the call was aware of this but the extension of the “data gathering” phase was very much welcomed by everyone present.

Hannah and Fern offered to produce an “information pack” that can be shared with our Breed Clubs and Club Members, which was also welcomed, and I am sure that Gem will keep all of our Breed Clubs updated via your Clubs own Health Co-ordinator and/or Secretary.  If you have any questions or feedback or just want to know more, please contact your Breed Club Secretary and/or visit the RKC website (details above) and remember, while the Scheme remains in the “data gathering” stage, please make the most of the opportunity to get as many dogs tested as possible and hopefully the results will be such that the RFGS is deemed not to be necessary as “Good/Best” Practice in our Breed as the rate of occurrence is so low that “we” are not deemed to be at risk in any way.

Last week I joined a webinar run by the Royal Kennel Club entitled “The History Of Conformation In Pedigree Dogs”.  This was not a breed-specific webinar, though some breeds were specifically referenced in order to illustrate the topic more clearly.  The speaker was Dr Alison Skipper, Veterinary and Research Adviser for the RKC.  This webinar was a follow-up to Alison’s previous webinar “The History of Closed Breed Registers within The Kennel Club” and though both webinars are available via the RKC website, either webinar/recording can be listened to independently.  The webinar last week discussed how different points of conformation have changed over time in various breeds and talked about why this may have come about.  It was a very interesting listen and if you want to hear it, it is available via the RKC You Tube channel: www.youtube.com/@TheKennelClubOfficial/playlists “Health Webinars”.

On Friday we all head off to WELKS where John Ryder is judging.  John has a super entry of 53 dogs and 65 bitches making a total entry of 126 from 118 exhibits, topping the Terrier Group.  Well done John, have a great day and good luck to everyone showing.  Judging starts at 9am.

AN update from Lesley McFadyen of East Anglian SBTC - A reminder to our members: we have this FREE event next Sunday 26th April. It will be a relaxed day, chatting about Staffords and anything dog related. We have speakers covering various subjects but we want you to lead the discussion, so bring your questions and ideas.

We hope to see you soon!

Lesley x

Thank you Lesley – I am sure the “Open Day” on Sunday will be a great success!

Finally, some very sad news.  Alan Mitchell passed away last week.  Alan was a stalwart member of our Breed for many, many years and his HOPLITE affix will be remembered by many. The funeral will be on 30th April at 11.30am at Glynn Valley Crematorium near Bodmin, Cornwall.  There will be a wake afterwards at Porthpean Sailing Club, St Austell where there will be a celebration of Alan’s life with a pasty and a drink.  If you are able to attend, can you please contact Mark Marshall and let him know if you would like a pasty – meat or veggie.

That’s about all for this week, taken care.

Looking forward to the Western SBTS Championship show in August, the Club have announced that they have sourced a new venue.  The previous venue, Mark Village Hall, was a lovely venue but as the show was held outdoors, it could be VERY cold when that wind blew straight up off the Bristol Channel!!  The new venue will be Thornbury Leisure Centre, Thornbury, BS35 3JB and will take place on 15th August, so make a note in your diaries as the show WILL NOT be back to back with Paignton, as it has been previously.

Finally, I have received an update from Bev and Anthony confirming that “Bear” – CH GAZSTAFF’S MAN IN BLACK FOR ANTONIOSTAFF – has been awarded his Veteran Warrant and is the first Stafford to gain ALL of the “new” titles – Champion, Junior Warrant, Show Certificate of Excellence, Open Show Warrant and Veteran Warrant!!  SO his full title is now CH GAZSTAFF’S MAN IN BLACK FOR ANTONIOSTAFF JW ShCEX OSW VW!!  Well done Bear!!

I have had an update from Lesley McFadyen, Secretary of East Anglian SBTC, to share with you all:

Firstly - a huge thank you to everyone that voted for our Club at The Pawscars. We didn't win - that thrill went to the Kooikerhonje Club of GB - but being amongst the three chosen finalists from all the nominations is a win in itself. We had a table of 10 and what a lovely evening we had. All dressed to the nines, it was lovely to spend relaxed time in good company.

Crufts is over for another year and our members have once again done us proud.  They can be seen on our Club Facebook page and we will feature them all in our summer magazine but meanwhile our special congratulations go to Angela and Shane Johnson with Poppy - Ellchansha Put A Spell On You - who only went and won the Bitch CC! Best SBT Bitch at Crufts is no mean feat, especially from such a quality entry. Well done!

Congratulations also to Kelly Harris and her team of Super Staffords that were placed 2nd in the Obreedience Ring - a great result for you all

At Crufts alongside the SBT rings there was free Respiratory Function Grading taking place. This test is to assess whether the dog has any BOAS related issues and a grading will be issued. For detailed info about the scheme, the test itself and what the gradings mean take a look here: Respiratory Function Grading Scheme | The Royal Kennel Club Crufts saw a great uptake by Staffords, which can only be good for proving the good respiratory health of the breed overall

You will have seen much information - and a lot of mis-information - about the IHA (Innate Health Assessment) and the Royal Kennel Club's Nose-To-Tail Assessment. The RKC are holding breed consultations in the coming months. If you wish to be included please register via this link

Register your interest for our Nose-to-Tail breeder consultation   The FAQ’s relating to this are below.

Our AGM is coming up shortly, on Sunday 29th March at The Millennium Centre, Red Lodge. The agenda has been circulated (on 17th March) and the meeting starts at 10.30am prompt so all Members please attend if you possibly can. This is a reminder to anyone that hasn't renewed membership this year yet that this will be the last email circular you will receive unless 2026 subs are paid.  Subs MUST be paid in order to attend the AGM.   If you aren't sure if you have renewed this year please contact Amanda Gold easbtc.memberships@btinternet.com

Another reminder - our Open Show is on Saturday 11th April at The Elizabethan Centre and entries are closing on 26th March so don't miss out. Details and entry here are via Fosse Data. Our judges are looking forward to a good day. Jamie Smith (Troystaff) will be judging the open show and Kerrie Coombes (Niatona) will be judging the Special Award Classes.

We will have Gary Jefferson in the kitchen serving up the famous Newmarket sausages as well as all the other goodies.

There will be a great raffle as always with prizes galore.

A fabulous sparkly sash for BEST IN SHOW supplied by Artlenock Accessories.

Beautiful sponsored rosettes (thank you to those that have sponsored) supplied by Willow Rosettes.

Specials for the main winners and prizes for each placed dog, including a £5 voucher from Primal Raw Ltd and a piece of Dog and Pet Bedding by Firebrand bedding for each 1st prize winner.

Artlenock Accessories, Natural Dog Treats and Firebrand bedding will all have their stalls at the show.

If you are a Club member (another good reason for renewing your membership!) and exhibiting at the show your name will be entered in to the 'Wheel of Names' to be spun on the day. The winner will receive a £50 voucher to spend with any of the Club sponsors.

Later, on 26th April we are also holding a relaxed SBT Discussion Day at a new venue in Lakenheath. There will be a few short talks on Canine Hydrotherapy, Canine First Aid and Early Neurological stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) and general chat on the SBT breed, which will be led by those present. Light refreshments will be available and the day is free to members (yet another reason to renew membership!)

Another date for your diary - Saturday 27th June - will see the usual collaboration between EASBTC and the East Midlands SBTC for a Breed Appreciation Day and Multiple Choice Exam. Details will follow in due course. There will be discounts for Club members so, guess what? It's ANOTHER good reason to keep your Club membership up to date!

RKC Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment FAQs

What is the Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment?

As part of the new Breeding for Health Framework, which groups breeds that share certain issues so targeted support can be provided and breed communities can share relevant experience and expertise, the Royal Kennel Club has committed to deliver, in close collaboration with both vets and breeders, key projects to help tackle each of the following areas: genetic diversity, conformation and breed-related disease.

One of these projects is the development of a Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment for visible conformation. Dogs require healthy body shapes to support their welfare, and breeders need practical tools to help them make informed and responsible breeding decisions. This new evidence-based and veterinary-led assessment will be suitable for all dogs but particularly intended to assess and monitor conformational traits that may be associated with welfare concerns.

What is our approach to its development?

The development of the RKC Nose-to-Tail Visual Assessment builds on many years of prior work and is being shaped through consultation with both veterinary and breeder stakeholder groups. Veterinary workshops are already underway, and the breeder workshops are scheduled for the end of March.

The veterinary advisory group is expected to complete the initial selection of assessment criteria by late March. These will then be reviewed by the breeder focus groups. The assessment will be trialled over the summer and refined in response to feedback from these pilots, with the aim of launching it by the end of 2026.

How were breed representatives selected for the breeder workshops?

All communications relating to the development of the Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment were initially shared with all Breed Health Coordinators (BHC), who are responsible for communicating with their wider breed community and coordinating representation at relevant meetings, such as these workshops. BHCs were advised that once attendance was confirmed, breed club secretaries would be informed of those attending these initial, focused sessions on behalf of their breed. For those breeds where we did not receive a nomination from the BHC, the opportunity to nominate a representative(s) was extended directly to the relevant breed clubs.

The workshops are as follows:

Last updated: 11 March 2026

• Workshop 1: Wednesday 18 March, 11:00am to 1:00pm

• Workshop 2: Monday 23 March, 7:00pm to 9:00pm

• Workshop 3: Wednesday 25 March, 7:00pm to 9:00pm

• Workshop 4: Tuesday 31 March, 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Although these workshops are of particular interest to breeds with body shape features sometimes considered extreme (for example, those that may be highlighted through the All-Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare’s Innate Health Assessment), the assessment is intended to be suitable for all dogs, therefore it is important that a wide range of breeds are represented.

How does the Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment differ from the Innate Health Assessment?

The RKC’s Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment, initiated in early 2025, builds on more than a decade of work through the Breed Health & Conservation Plans. However, recent external developments towards the end of 2025, such as the All-Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare’s Innate Health Assessment (IHA), have made this work more important than ever. Developed in collaboration with veterinarians and breeders, particularly those representing breeds most likely to be affected, the Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment will sit alongside the independent IHA and will support ongoing improvement through data collection.

APGAW are supportive of the RKC developing the Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment. Central to this is an agreement from APGAW to meet with the RKC, and a carefully selected panel of representatives from the breeding community, and review the current criteria based on evidence, which support improved canine welfare. For more information about the RKC and APGAW Dog Health Action Plan please visit: https://www.royalkennelclub.com/about-us/resources/media-centre/2026/february/rkc-and-apgaw-announce-plan-to-prioritise-dog-welfare-and-find-a-workable-solution-to-protect-pedigree-breeder-community/

Which breeds is it applicable to?

The RKC Nose-to-Tail Veterinary Assessment is intended to be suitable for all dogs regardless of breed. However, we expect that the assessment will be particularly relevant for breeds that have previously been identified as potentially having conformational traits that may be associated with welfare concerns.

What other opportunities are there to support its development?

We will be offering further consultation opportunities following the workshops, which will be open to all, and we encourage anyone interested to register here.

What are the next steps following the workshops?

As we are holding four workshops over a couple of weeks, it is likely that the discussion process will evolve during this period, since we can use feedback from earlier sessions to modify what we cover in later sessions. Following these discussion workshops, we will be finalising the draft criteria, deciding grade boundaries (with support from various veterinary sources) and writing the formal description of the draft assessment evidence base, format and process. We will then move into a practical development stage, which will include various pilot sessions over the summer, at dog shows and elsewhere, followed by further feedback and appropriate revisions as needed.

Who is included in the veterinary focus group?

Overall, 23 vets have so far contributed to the development of the provisional Nose-to-Tail assessment criteria, all volunteering their time to support the project. Most of them are in general practice, but some work in referral practice and/or universities, including three professors. Three-quarters of the vets involved in the main focus group have shown dogs themselves, and two-thirds of them have bred dogs, with personal experience between them of breeding dogs across all seven show groups. Many are also judges, show vets, and/or involved in other canine activities.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 16th March 2026

Hello Again!  I hope you have all had a great week.

Firstly I must start with an apology and correction.  Last week I reported that the successful Obreedience Team at Crufts was captained by Tracey Robbins.  It was actually the Super Staffords Team that won the Obreedience and they are captained by Kelly Harris.  However, the Stafford Stars, who are captained by Tracey Robbins, also competed and I apologise for my error.  Massive congratulations to you all – you do our Breed proud and thank you for all of the time and effort you put into the Obreedience discipline.

Now on to some results from last weekend.  On Sunday 15th March Northern Counties Sporting Terrier Association held their Group Open Show at Ferryhill Leisure Centre where Jason Kirk (Kirstaff) was judging. Jason had an entry of 24 from 22 exhibits across 6 classes.  From the 14 exhibits actually present Jason’s main winners were as follows:

BOB – CH NIATONA WRECK IT RALPH 23.07.2021 (Jodel’s Impact x Niatona Cushie Butterfield)

RBOB – SIKAISTAFF THUG ROSE FOR ELMISSICO JW 17.01.2024 (Jasamarch Celtic Lad x Sikaistaff Fire Within)

BPIB – STAFFRANOS ESQUIRE AT RAGNARSTAFFS 24.04.2025 (Fairlenium’s American Pie x Bella Z Bytynskiego Wzgorza Staffranos (IMP POL))

Well done everyone.

Also taking place on Sunday 15th March was Retford Canine Society Premier Open Show at Newark & Notts Agricultural Showground.  Judge for this show was Dawn Jamieson-Bramley (Tyneview) and she had an entry of 18 from 15 exhibits across 5 classes.  From the 13 exhibits present, Dawn’s main winners were as follows:

BOB – GEORDIESTOON DEFIANT BOY FOR WEORC JW 29.07.2024 (CH Niatona Wreck It Ralph x Mournestaffs Lily’O)

RBOB – KALOSTAFF ES LO QUE ES JW 26.11.2022 (Alport Hallo Man x Busters Black Princess At Kalostaff)

BPIB – CROWSTAFF SEIZE THE DAY FOR WEORC 25.03.2025 (CH Ellchansha Charm The Devil At Moorstar x CH Northstaff Bay Bomber For Crowstaff JW)

Well done all.

Yet another show taking place on Sunday 15th March was Oswestry and District Kennel Association Open Show at The Agricultural Showground, Park Hall near Oswestry.  This venue is very easy to get to – a straight run across the M54 and A5 heading for North Wales.  The parking is plentiful, though not all on hard-standing.  Some of the judging took place outdoors (not Staffords I hasten to add) which was a bit wet at times and VERY cold.  The indoor space was very limited, though the rings were of decent size.  Coffees were hot and strong, though I don’t think there were any hot sandwiches available, but it was a well-run show nonetheless.

Judging Staffords was Simon Green (Cocostaff) and he had an entry of 12 across 3 classes from 12 exhibits.  From the 9 exhibits present, his main winners were:

BOB – HAMASON HEART’S ON FIRE JW 24.08.2024 (CH Earthquake Staffs Wear It Well At Tigerbull ShCEX (IMP ESP) x Hamason Belle O’The Ball)

RBOB – HAMASON SWEET LITTLE MYSTRY JW 09.11.2023 (CH Niatona Arlo Coombes x Hamason A Wish Away)

BPIB – JAZOSTAFFS SUPER MOON 20.03.2025 (CH Callostaff Son Of The Moon x CH Kamaristaffs Royal Gem At Jazostaff JW)

Well done everyone.

In other news, the Breed Council held their AGM on Saturday 14th March where the election of Officers was high on the agenda.  Martin Johnson has been undertaking the role of Acting Chair since Dave Lee passed away and he stood unopposed to take on the role for the current 3 year term to March 2029.  Of the 14 Clubs currently “in” the Breed Council (Membership is not mandatory and 3 of the Breed’s 17 Clubs have currently chosen not to be a part of the Council), 12 of them were present at the time of the vote and all 12 voted “For” Martin – well done!

The position of Secretary/Treasurer was also available as Helen Reaney decided last year to step down after 14 years in the role and 19 years serving the Breed Council.  Thank you Helen for all of your hard work, though you are not going too far away I know, as you are still continuing in your role as Breed Education Co-ordinator.

Two nominees were proposed for the role, myself and Karon Jackson, though  I understand that Karon decided to withdraw from the nomination at the last minute.  Of the 13 Clubs present for this vote (1 of our Clubs had joined the meeting via zoom by this point), 10 Clubs voted for me, 2 Clubs voted against me and 1 Club abstained from the vote altogether.  Thank you to all of the Clubs and their Committees who voted for me, I will do my very best to serve the Breed and you to the very best of my ability within the remit of the role and I am looking forward to working with you all.

Steve Bainborough, who was the Public Relations Officer, also decided to withdraw from the nomination for the role at then last minute without the Member Clubs having had the opportunity to consider any other nominees.  Therefore, this position is currently vacant.

Next weekend Southern Counties SBTS are holding their first Open Show of the year where Georgia Kirk (Kirstaff) will be judging.  The show opens at 9am with judging starting at 10am with Veteran Dog first in the ring.  The venue is Navestock Village Hall – a great venue in Brentwood – so pop along if you are inn the area and support the judge and the Club for what I am sure will be a great day.  For those of you who are Members of the Club, the AGM will take place after the show has closed (approximately 3pm) and you should all have now received your agenda’s and invitations.  If not, please contact Ken Meneer, Hon Secretary, via scsbts1937@gmail.com and he will be happy to help you.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 9th March 2026.

And relax………..as Crufts 2026 rolls out of town, we can all take a breather and recover from the aching feet and depleted bank accounts after being tempted to buy lots of doggy stuff from the hundreds of stalls.  It was a very long day with judging starting at 8am and not completing until roughly 5pm.  The Terrier Group had been called to the collecting ring quite some time before judging had finished in either of our rings – but with the biggest Terrier entry and the 5th highest entry overall, it’s hardly surprising that judging took so long.  In the end, the referee – Colin Powell, who was judging the Terrier Group – had to be called to make the decision on Best Of Breed.  However, though Colin put the dog through, he did not find a place for it in the Group unfortunately.

So on to the results and facts and figures.  There were 442 entries overall from 393 exhibits which were split between 182 dogs and 211 bitches.  The judges were Karon Jackson (dogs) and Martin Grimwood (bitches) and the main winners were as follows:

On Thursday 26th February a Celebration of Life for Joyce Shorrock was held and Lesley McFadyen has shared this lovely update for those of you who could not be there in person, though I am sure we were all there in our hearts.

Today was a lovely day - a celebration of the life of Joyce Shorrock. We met at a beautiful hotel right on the Norfolk Broads and the sun shone!

Heidi and Jules Shorrock both did their mum proud, their tributes were on point to a wonderful lady. We shared memories and laughs. Thank you to all those that sent through memories of Joyce - I took them all along and they were present along with the ‘memory table’ for all to enjoy. We all agreed - a life well lived. A lady well loved. Joyce - you will never be forgotten because we will talk of you always x

Heidi wrote this verse - isn’t it lovely?

I'll think of you when I'm picking clothes

In hughes blue, gold, green or even rose.

With strong support from family and friend

That stayed with you to the bitter end.

I'll think back on times and parties old

Of Christmases gone and jumpers bold.

We celebrate your generosity with cheer

And for those attending, maybe too much beer.

A grand estate at Weston Hall

Enough for all at the Christmas ball.

A wife, a mother and a guiding hand

The matriarch of the Shorrock brand.

I'll remember you when the lights are low

Imagine you at a championship show.

Reviewing pup, bitch, dog or stud

To figure out top dog from dud.

Judging each class with a view to find

The best in show with an open mind.

And there to mould the future breed

And achieve renown through thought and deed.

Your with us now, through thick and thin

In photos, pedigrees, on bits of tin.

For ever present but now unseen

Thank you mum for all that's been.

Thank you Lesley, I am sur it was a most fitting tribute to such a wonderful lady.

Also, the East Anglian SBTC were nominated for the Pawscars Breed Club Award. Lesley shares an update from the event:

Well, we may not have won at The Pawscars last night (we were joint 2nd ) but we had a FABULOUS time, dressed to the nines, it was a smashing evening spending relaxed time with good friends and it is perfectly true, just getting to be there is a massive achievement. I know Joyce was so pleased with the Club nomination - she would’ve been very proud of us all. I didn’t take ANY photos as my battery was dying but I know the others did so you will have to look out for them once they’ve all got some sleep!

Thank you to everyone that supported us and voted and big congratulations to the lovely people of The Kooikerhondje Club of GB - it was lovely to meet you x

I spoke with Lesley at Discover Dogs on Friday and she shared with me that the members of The Kooikerhondje Club of GB are big fans of the EA SBTC and admire them so much that they absolutely thought EA SBTC would win – high praise indeed.  We are all so proud of you Guys on the EA SBTC and you are always our winners.

In other news from Crufts, the “Super Staffords Team”, captained by Tracey Robbins, only went and took 2nd place in the Obreedience Final on Thursday judged by Jacqueline Ashmore!!

The aim of Obreedience is to encourage a wider variety of different breeds to take part in a competition, which includes some of the exercises generally associated with Obedience. Obreedience is a team event and highlights the abilities of different breeds in a relaxed and fun competition. There is no limit to the number of members that make up a particular team but each heat requires four handlers and four dogs of the same breed which take part in two rounds of competition. The 1st is a team heelwork round and the 2nd, a round of 4 individual exercises, each one completed by a different dog and handler.  Briefly, the exercises consist of :

Heelwork

Is a stewarded team exercise where all dogs start and end sitting at heel beside the handlers left leg. Dogs and handlers should remain synchronised and in line, throughout the chosen pattern of turns, weave and halts, without the need for the lead to be tight. There are 3 heelwork patterns for the judge to choose from, (Test A, Test B and Test C)

Individual exercises will all start and end on the steward’s direction.

Send to bed
The dog should go to its bed and settle there, on the command of it’s handler. The dog is shown where the bed is positioned prior to the handler returning with him/her to the start point of the exercise. The dog should remain on the bed until the handler has replaced the lead, signifying the end of exercise.

Retrieve
The dog should retrieve an article, thrown by the handler, and should return with it to sit in front of the handler. The dog should continue holding the article until the handler takes it, before sending the dog on the steward’s command, to sit beside their left leg.

Stop the Dog and Play
The dog must be able to remain in a settled position, whilst the handler moves away to a designated spot. The handler is asked to recall the dog, but must then stop it within a marked area. The dog should remain in position until the handler returns, clips the lead on and then plays with the dog, until the steward signifies the end of exercise.

Scent
The dog’s article is placed in position, in a straight line made up of 5 other articles, with the dog’s view of them obscured. The dog is then sent to find its own article, ignoring the other 5. The dog is likely to use both sight and scent to detect the correct article, and having done so, should return with it, to sit in front of the handler. The handler must take the article, before sending the dog to sit beside their left leg, when asked to do so by the steward.

If you think your Stafford might have what it takes to become an Obreedience Team member, please reach out to Tracey who, I am sure, will be happy to help you.

Also taking place at Crufts alongside the SBT bitches ring 14 there were free Respiratory Function Grading tests taking place. Jane Ladlow, one of the world’s leading experts in BOAS research, believes that our breed is in a great position to be able to eliminate the issue in the small percentage of dogs affected in our breed by working together.

If we can work together now that we have this tool available to use we can bring the number of clinically affected dogs down to zero.

As a breed that has always been proactive with owners willing to help keep our breed healthy, why not take advantage of something that is a good opportunity and I know many of you did as there was a queue of participants throughout the day.

We went along with Cleo (Hamason Heart’s On Fire) immediately after the judging of her class had finished.  The test was very straight forward and completely non-invasive.  Firstly we had to submit Cleo’s details (RKC Name, number and microchip number) along with owner details (name, address & email).  She was then weighed and the two assessors carefully studied Cleo’s body shape to give her a Body Conditioning Score.  Body conditioning scoring is a technique that allows you to look at your dog and see how they compare to a range of images from underweight to overweight dogs. Regardless of your dog's age, size or breed type, these scoring systems can be used to help you see if your dog has any issues with their weight, and to what degree.  The scoring is from 1 (very under weight) to 9 (very over weight) with 5 being the ideal.  Cleo was rated as 5 – ideal.

The assesors then carefully studied Cleo’s nostrils.  Extreme conformation of the nostrils and nose can have a profound impact on the health and welfare of a dog. Open nostrils are vital for allowing oxygen into the airways, for permitting normal scent behaviour, cooling down the dog and preventing over-heating. When assessing the degree of stenosis (pinched nostrils) the assessors also considered the level (if any) of respiratory distress that is present.  The gradings are as follows:

Open nostrils Acceptable and ideal as the nostrils allow the movement of sufficient air

Mild stenosis Acceptable unless the dog shows any additional signs of respiratory distress

Moderate stenosis Not acceptable, especially when accompanied by breathing through the mouth or any other sign of compromised breathing

Severe stenosis Not acceptable

Cleo’s nostrils were rated as OPEN.

The assessors then listened to Cleo’s breathing at various points on her chest, abdomen and neck.  She was then taken outside for a specified period of time with a “runner” and when she returned, her breathing was assessed again.

The guidance for rating respiration is:

No respiratory concerns •Dog is calm, able to breathe through their nose without noise, with mouth closed • No movement of flanks outside of normal range • No respiratory noise. Dog is able to exercise freely and easily with minimal and effortless panting • Dog recovers immediately after exercise

Health of dog is preferable and is favourable

Mild respiratory concerns • Dog is calm, may pant through mouth instead of breathing through the nose • May have slight respiratory noise with no visible effort • Dog can exercise freely but may pant for a period during or after exercise, with slight respiratory noise • Dog recovers immediately after exercise

Preferable to other individuals with respiratory concern

Moderate respiratory concerns • Dog is slightly distressed, breathing mostly through mouth • Has some respiratory sound and noticeable flank movement • Dog can move but may be reluctant to do so, will pant throughout exercise and may take some time to recover

Should be penalised as degree of concern is not acceptable

Severe respiratory concerns •  Dog is clearly distressed and cannot breathe through nose • Noticeable “rasping” respiratory noise • Excessive flank movement with breathing and does not appear to recover after exercise In addition: • May show obvious signs of distress • Visible mucous membranes, for example, gums and tongue, may be blue • May be reluctant to move • May vomit or collapse

Must be heavily penalised as this degree of distress is not acceptable

The assessors also listened to Cleo’s heart and took her temperature.

Cleo was graded overall as 0 (zero) though Jane Ladlow did comment that she was “excitable” – something we were very well aware of!!

The results were emailed to us before we even walked out of the test area along with an information booklet and a recommendation that she is tested every 2 years whilst she is being used in any breeding programme.

The whole experience was very straight forward and I would recommend anybody and everybody to look into the whole debate very carefully and make sure you are aware and informed before you make y0our decision whether to get your dogs tested, particularly if you are intending to breed from your dog or bitch.

That’s about all for this week.  Have a great week!

SBT Breed Notes w/c 2nd February 2026

It is with a heavy heart that I bring the sad news of the passing of Joyce Shorrock just a few days after celebrating her 100th birthday.  I will hand over to Lesley McFadyen of the East Anglia SBTC, who came to know Joyce so well over the years.

“Some of you may have already seen this sad news online. This week sees the end of an era. On Monday afternoon (26th January) our Club's Founder Member, Joyce Shorrock, passed away peacefully at her home with her family, having celebrated her 100th birthday last week. Some of you will have met or spoken with Joyce over the years, but many will only know her name through the legacy she has left behind.

Joyce first became involved in Staffordshire Bull Terriers herself in the 1950s and soon established a name for herself as a consistent breeder of quality dogs bearing the Eastaff kennel name, ten of which became UK Champions as well as other multiple show winners, and six of which became Australian Champions and laid foundations for kennels there. Ch Eastaff Danom sired multiple champions himself and is the dog featured on our Club logo. In the early 1970s Joyce had the vision to see that a Breed Club based in the East Anglian area would be a great way to bring owners and lovers of the breed together, not just for exhibition, but as a friendly community, to help and support each other. It is because of Joyce's vision we are here today, that Club being formed in 1973 with Joyce serving as Secretary from the inception until 2000 at which point she stepped in to the role of President, and subsequently Patron of the Club, always maintaining the same interest and enthusiasm as she had had from the early days. She has always been our Club's biggest supporter.

As a judge Joyce's integrity was unquestionable and her opinions sought around the world. She judged the bitches at our Club Silver Jubilee show in 1998 and dogs at Crufts in 2000 as well as her many other appointments worldwide, she was often to be found speaking at seminars and she co-wrote the book 'The Ultimate Staffordshire Bull Terrier' with her good friend Clare Lee (Constones SBTs).

Over many years the help and advice Joyce will have offered to so many is remarkable. Many of you will have spoken to her in your quest to find a SBT puppy. For myself, I can only say that Joyce has been my mentor and guiding light since we first met. I was fortunate in that I became 'designated driver' for her and June Bennett to many shows and SBT events over the years, which meant I had the privilege of listening to their wisdom on our trips. Even up to present day Joyce has always maintained her interest in and love of the breed and I'm sure it was her Stafford spirit that saw her through that 100th birthday last week, surrounded by family, friends and tributes from so many of you.

The Committee will be honouring Joyce's memory throughout the year and we would love you to share your memories and tales of an absolute legend in our world. If you send through any memories you have they will be shared in our magazine later in the year

The family will organise a gathering at some point for those that would like to come and celebrate her wonderful life. Meanwhile they ask that anyone wishing to donate in memory of their mum should give to the Senior Staffy Club to help the 'oldies'

https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/2446#!/DonationDetails

Joyce was extremely proud to know that the Club has been nominated for the Pawscars awards this year - I think now we have to do our utmost to ensure HER Club is the winner.   If you haven't already voted you can do so via this link. Please share it with all of your family and friends.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 26th January 2026

Hello Again!  Well, that’s January virtually over and if any of you have been doing “Dry January” – well done!!

On to some results.  On Sunday 25th January East Midlands SBTC held their first Open Show of the year at Overseal Village Hall in Derbyshire.  This is a lovely venue with easy access and a decent sized room for the ring.  There is a further room to the side which gives more space for crates and a little kitchen which the lovely ladies of the Committee make full use of, cooking up some smashing bacon and sausage cobs for breakfast.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 19th January 2026

Hello Again!  I hope you have had a good week.

Let’s start this week with a celebration for a very special Lady who has reached the amazing milestone of 100 years young!!  Joyce Shorrocks of the Eastaff Kennel has celebrated her 100th birthday this week – on 20th January.  Joyce is the Lady who pointed my Dad (Harry Robinson) in the direction of Gerald & Gwen Dudley (Wychbury) to buy his first “show Stafford” – so, over 50 years on Joyce, you have a lot to answer for!!  I remember Stotter (CH Eastaff Lil’ Stotter) coming to stay with us for a few days and he was allowed to stay in the “best room” – even I wasn’t allowed in the “best room”!!  I hope you had a super day Joyce and I am sure all of our readers join me in wishing you many more Happy Returns.

Now, on to the business of show results – and we are off!  First Champ show of the year took place on Thursday 15thJanuary in Sandylands Hall at Stafford County Showground – “The Classic” – Manchester Dog Show  Society. Judging on the day were Gareth Thomas (Gazstaff) awarding his first set of C.C.’s in the dog ring and Isidoro Martinez (Bullbrothers) awarding his second set of C.C.’s in the bitch ring.  With 63 dogs and 93 bitches making a total of 147 with 156 entries, their main winners were:

DCC & BOB – ELLCHANSHA CHARM THE DEVIL AT MOORSTAR JW 26.06.2023 (Ch Elitebulls Challenger JW x Ch Ellchansha Once Upon A Time JW).  This was Henley’s crowning award – congratulations to Natalie on the breed’s latest champion – well done!!

Well done everyone – a great start to the year!

On Sunday 18th January North West SBTC held their Open Show where Cally Seymour (Dekayro) was the scheduled judge.  Unfortunately Cally had to withdraw at the last minute due to illness.  I hope you are feeling better Cally and I hope we will see you back out and about exhibiting and judging very soon.

I am sure the Club were initially in a panic to find a replacement judge at short notice but the Officers and Committee pulled it off and Kerrie Coombes (Niatona) stepped into the breach to make sure the show went ahead as planned.  With a total entry of 55 exhibits from 24 dog entries and 36 bitch entries making 60 entries overall, Kerrie found her winners as follows:

SBT Breed Notes w/c 12th January 2026

Hello Again!  Well, what a week that was!  I hope you all stayed safe and warm and managed to get through the ice and snow without any trips or falls.  I think the forecast for the coming week is warmer but I would still recommend wrapping up warm for Manchester Champ Show as it’s always a cold one when those doors are left open.

You may remember that I brought you an update back in November from Rhiannon Thomas, Secretary of the Anglesey Canine Society.  Rhiannon had explained that the Society had a new Committee and were reinvigorating the Club after a few years of inactivity.  Rhiannon has been in touch this week with a further update tom share with you all:

Happy New Year! It’s been a while (and you may think we’ve forgotten our manners) but Anglesey CS starts the year with a big Thank You for your kindness in giving our KC Accredited Seminar Day publicity in your Breed Notes, in November. We’re delighted to say the Seminars were a rollicking success, with a perfect number of participants (15) that made the group lively, but not intimidating for taking part. Christina Chapman was a revelation, her knowledgeable presentation combined with humour gave the day a real Feel Good factor ~ and everybody passed their Points of the Dog exam! Perfect! Thank You!

Then it was straight in to the preparations for our first Show ~ not only for the new Committee, but the first for Anglesey CS since 2019! And this comes along with a Handling Day, the next day ~ both events being a “Welcome Back!” celebration ~ “Love Me, Love my Dog” during Valentine’s Day week-end, 14 and 15 February next. As well as the usual AVNSC, we’ve scheduled a small number of breeds, numerically popular in North Wales, and we have the honour of welcoming top former Junior Handling legends Adrian Hili and Marina White to judge the Limited Show on Saturday then hosting the Handling Day on the Sunday.

It’s only a couple of weeks before Crufts, so a perfect opportunity to run off those winter cobwebs ~ and plenty of time to put the Handling Day Training into practice in time for the Big Day! It’s the same venue as the Seminars Day, mere minutes from the Britannia Bridge onto Anglesey, and an easy run along the A55 ~ so no excuses there!

If this message reaches you in time : we are accepting Postal Entries ~ these close on 21st January, while the Online Entries are open till the 27th on Fosse Data. Anyone wishing to receive a printed schedule via first class post, please telephone Hon Sec Rhiannon Thomas quickly on (01286) 673 105. There is an ansaphone ~ it’s a really long ring!

There is no 'closing date' for reserving a place on the Handling Day workshops (morning / afternoon) ~ please contact Hon Secretary Rhiannon Thomas on (01286) 673 105, or angleseysecretary@gmail.com, for the Information Sheet and Booking Form. But we already have places reserved, so be quick!

Meanwhile, thank you again for supporting the Accredited Seminars, it really was such a help ~ and we wish you, your breed and the Notes a happy and successful New Year! With best wishes, that you’re keeping safe and warm,

Regards,

Rhiannon Thomas

Thank you Rhiannon for that comprehensive update.  I am so pleased to hear the Seminars were such a success and I hope your first show in several years is awesome – I am sure it will be!!

I have also had an update from Lesley McFadyen from East Anglia SBTC to share with you all:

Happy New Year to everyone!!!!  Let's hope it's a good one for all of us

Your Club has some AMAZING news to start off the year.......  we have been nominated in the 'Breed Club of the Year' category at the PAWSCARS awards.

https://www.facebook.com/share/1C3LEDZ4Eu/?mibextid=wwXIfr

This organisation is in its 11th year and holds an annual awards ceremony just before Crufts where they raise funds for both canine and children's charities, having donated £154,820 so far. Voting in all categories will commence next week (we will let you know when voting is open) and we hope, of course, that all of our members will vote for us and encourage friends and families to do so too

This is a gentle reminder to those who don't pay via standing order that subs are now due if you wish to renew your membership. Just let our membership secretary, Amanda Gold, know that you have renewed either via bank transfer(HSBC sort code: 40-16-57 acc no: 11344765 or Paypal (easbtclub@gmail.com - please use the 'friends & family' option). The current membership cost is £8. This includes your summer and winter magazine, entry into our member draws, and entry into the extra draws if you exhibit at our shows. We have decided to reduce the overseas membership cost to £8, aligning it with the UK fee. We will supply their magazines via an online link to eliminate postage costs and complications.

Our Club AGM will be held at The Millennium Centre, Red Lodge on Sunday 29th March. Any proposals for the agenda should be with the secretary by 24th January.

Entries are now open for our Spring Open Show, which is being held at The Elizabethan Centre, Whaplode Drove PE12 0GB on Saturday 11th April. Our judge for the day is Jamie Smith (Troystaff), with the Special Award Classes being judged by Kerrie Coombes (Niatona).

Lesley x

Thank you Lesley for the update and information and what fantastic news about the Clubs nomination for the Pawscars!!  As soon as the voting opens I am sure everyone will join me in making sure we get our votes in.  Fingers crossed for a win!!

That’s about all for this week, have a great week and please let me know if you have any news you would like to share.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 5th January 2026

Hello Again.  So 2026 has started off with snow, ice and freezing temperatures – not the best for dog walks though if your Staffords are like mine, they love a bit of snow!  Just make sure their paws are cleaned of salt and grit when you get home as this can cause upset tummies if they lick their paws and ingest too much salt.

The last show results I shared were from LKA on 14th December and though this was the last Champ Show of the year, there have been quite a few Open Shows taking place so I’ll crack on and bring you as many results as I have found.  Please remember, if you attend any shows, send the results to me and I will share with everyone.

On 21st December Boston and District held their Open Show at Newark Showground.  Jayne Lewis (Karjaydan) was the scheduled judge but unfortunately had to withdraw due to family health issues.  The replacement judge was Cheryl Satherley (Silkcroft) and from the 21 entries Cheryl’s main winners were:

BOB – HAMASON HEART’S ON FIRE 24.08.2024 (CH Earthquake Staffs Wear It Well At Tigerbull (IMP ESP) x Hamason Belle O’ The Ball)

Well done all.

On Tuesday 30th December Worcester and Malvern Canine Society held their Open Show at the RKC Building, Stoneleigh Park.  Judging Staffords was Keith Price and these classes were held in memory of Jim Beaufoy (Wyrefare) with rosettes for BOB, BP & BV sponsored by Barbara and Barbara-Ann Beaufoy and trophies for BOB, BP & BV donated by Pat Harkin.

Keith had 22 dogs, making 23 entries and 30 bitches, making 30 entries giving a superb total of 53 exhibits making 54 entries.  His main winners were:

BOB – JANJOMA HEART AND SOUL AT MATRIXSTAFFS 02.04.2024 (CH Elitebulls Challenger JW x Janjoma Harvest Gold).  She then went on to take Terrier Group 1 under Group judge and SBT Breed Specialist, Carl Dean (Kylestaff).

BVIB – CH ELITEBULLS CHALLENGER JW 25.04.2017 (CH Eclypstaff Cuz I Can x Elitebull Elegance JW).

Carl Dean was also judging the AV Terrier classes and Staffords virtually cleaned up in these classes too:

AV Terrier Junior was won by DUSKLIGHT SMALL TOWN BOY AT MASKALON 23.12.2024 (Fergiestaffs Polar Bear JW x Dusklight Cassiopeia)

CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC then went on to take TERRIER VETERAN GROUP 1, also judged by Karen Thomas, and then he went on to take BEST VETERAN IN SHOW under judge Christina Chapman (Bukris).  Fantastic result – well done Team Kenny!!

Moving on to other news, I see that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club AGM has been announced via their FaceBook page and it will be taking place on Sunday 22nd February 2026 at Wedges Mills, Cannock.  If you are a Member of the Club, make sure you put the date in your diary.  You should also have received your Members Only Ballot Papers for the forthcoming Open Shows in 2027 and the Champ Shows in 2029 and 2030.  Make sure these are completed and returned by 30th January in the pre-paid envelope provided – the results will be announced at the AGM.

East Midlands SBTC have also announced their AGM and that will be taking place on Sunday 25th January at Overseal Village Hall, Swadlincote, starting at 9am.  Their Open Show will be taking place immediately afterwards where Julie Gray (Aberstaff) will be judging.

I have had an update from The Potteries SBTC to confirm that their AGM will be announced shortly and Members will be notified by email.  Dave McKimm, Secretary, has also confirmed the dates and judges for their forthcoming shows and these are:

Sun 15th Feb – Open Show – Jim McCarthy

Sat 18th Jul – Champ Show – Terri Morrell (dogs) and John Parker (bitches) with Frank Reader as Referee.

Sun 11th Oct – Open Show – Tracy Hamilton.

Interestingly, Tracy Hamilton is one of the proposed judges up for election for the SBTC Open Show in May 2027.  As this potential appointment is within the 150 mile radius of the SBTC show and less than 12 months from Tracy’s confirmed judging appointment for The Potteries on 11th October 2026, I am not sure how this fits within the SBTC Club Rules for eligibility.  I have also been led to believe that another of the 4 judges up for election for the May 2027 show is not eligible, but I have not had that officially confirmed as yet.  I am sure all will be clarified at the AGM.

I have had an email from Jean Rundle, Secretary of the Terrier Club of Devon and Cornwall, to remind you all of their 75 Class Open Show to be held on Sunday 15th February 2026 and Culm Valley Sports Centre, Cullompton, Devon, EX15 1LL. Once again we are scheduling  6 classes of Staffordshire Bull Terriers and our judge for that show is LINDA HALL (GEORDIESTAFF)  and it would be nice if we could receive a good entry for her please. Postal entries close Monday 26th January 2026 (Postmark) and Online entries close Monday 2nd February 2026 (Midnight) enter online at: www.onlineshowentry.com.

Thank you Jean – wishing you every success with your show and hope Linda gets a fabulous entry.

Finally, you may recall a few weeks ago I confirmed that Steve Bainborough, Public Relations Officer for the Breed Council, would be joining me in producing the Breed Notes.  Steve has contacted me to say that he does not wish to continue with the Breed Notes as a joint endeavour and he has asked that his name and contact details are not included in my notes submissions as he does not wish to be seen to be endorsing these notes.  Steve will be working on producing updates that he feels are valid and he will be submitting these notes separately to those I submit, though his notes will not be weekly, just as and when.

That’s about all for this week, have a great week everyone and remember to let me know if there is anything you want me to share.
