Breed Notes

SBT Breed Notes w/c 17th November 2025

Hello Again!  I hope you have all had a good week and Storm Claudia didn’t cause too much damage wherever you are.  We drove down to the SBTC of South Wales on Sunday for their Champ Show and we saw a lot of flooding along the M50 and into Monmouth.  I really hope that none of you were affected.

Back to the weekend before – Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of November – for the East Midlands and SBTC Double-header.  On Saturday at East Midlands had a total of 253 exhibits (including 5 NFC) making 283 entries.  Amelie Chaine (Des Terres D’Amour) was judging dogs and Maureen Ward (Zabaretts) was judging bitches with Frank Gough as referee.  Amelie had stepped in just a few weeks before as Diane Taylor, who was originally due to judge the dogs, is currently out of action having had surgery on her hip just this week.  I am sure you all join me in wishing Diane a speedy recovery and hope to see you out and about again soon.

Well done all.

In other results, CH HASBURYSTAFF TOP GUN A.I. JW – Reserve Dog CC winner on 9th November, also took BEST IN SHOW at an all breeds Open Show on 19th October 2025.  He won Best Of Breed under Breed Specialist, Natasha Walker (Teshleystaff) and then BIS under judge, Jo Pinfold – massive well done!

Last Thursday, 13th November, I attended the Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh.  Helen Reaney, Breed Education Co-Ordinator for Staffords, had contacted me to ask if my boy, Barney, was available to represent the Terrier Group at the Eye For A Dog Assessment (E.F.A.D.A.) that was taking place on that day.  Now Barney has quite a busy schedule – snoozing until lunchtimegoing for a few walkies and then taking 40 winks during the afternoon before tea and another walk just before bed – but he’s a good sport and agreed to take part as a special favour to Helen!

The E.F.A.D.A. is part of the Judges Education Programme (JEP), specifically for judges who already award C.C.’s in 3 different breeds and are wanting to progress to award C.C.’s in their fourth or subsequent breeds.

There were 7 dogs in attendance, one from each of the 7 Groups – Terrier, Working, Utility, Pastoral, Gundog, Toy and Hound – and were identified by letter  A, B, C, D, E, F or G. Throughout the day, the dogs were only ever referred to by the letter they had been given at the start of the day.

The delegates were split into 7 “groups” with 1 or 2 people in each “group”.

The 7 dogs were asked to move individually, firstly in the shape of an “X” – twice up and back moving “\” then twice up and back moving “/” – then once in a big circle.  The delegates were “arranged” in 4 groups one group at each of the 4 points of the “X” so that they could see each dog clearly from front, back, left side and right side as well as moving in a circle.

The delegates were encouraged to make notes as they watched each dog move, presumably recording what they could see.

After all dogs had moved, they were sent to stand at their designated “station” – these were 7 tables spaced around the room identified as either A, B, C, D, E, F or G.

A “group” of delegates was then sent to each table where they had a set amount of time in which to assess each dog and make their notes.  The delegates all went over the dog, looked at the dog from various angles and made their notes.  The only question they asked was the age of the dog, though some didn’t even ask that.  At the end of each timed session, the “invigilators” from the Kennel Club collected the paperwork and the “group” moved on to the next dog.

The whole process was quite intense, there was no conversation between delegates whilst the dogs were being assessed, and there were several invigilators dotted around the room throughout the day.

Some of the delegates were supported by note-takers, as a reasonable adjustment to assist with any restrictions they had, giving a “level playing field” for everyone.

The whole process took about 3.5 hours, having had a break part way through of about 20 minutes to enable the dogs to pop outside or have a drink then, after a longer break at lunchtime for the dogs and their humans, the whole process was repeated again on the afternoon with a different set of delegates.

It felt like being back at school and taking an exam!

It was a long day and some humans brought a different dog (but from the same breed/Group) for the afternoon session.  But as a human, I thoroughly enjoyed the day.  Barney had a great time too – he enjoyed all of the fuss and attention, he had a fab time running around the paddock with any sticks he could find, though by the end of the day, he was glad to get back in the car and have a sleep on the way home.  I hope I am invited to do it again and Barney said he will happily go again!!

Anyway, that’s about it for this week.  Have a great week and let me or Steve know if you have anything to share.  Take care.

SBT Breed Notes – w/c 10th November 2025.

Hello Again!  I hope you have all had a good week and the fireworks have not upset your dogs too much.  I must admit that a couple of ours are petrified and personally, I wish fireworks were banned from public sale and only available for professionally organised events.  Where we live, we have had fireworks being lit every night for over 3 weeks now, starting at about 6pm and still going off as late as 1am!  It really is not fair on any animals or their owners.

Last weekend was a busy one with East Midlands and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club holding their Championship shows on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November respectively.  They were both long, late days and as I was at both shows, I have not had chance to write up the results or the main winners as yet but I promise I will bring them to you next week.  However, I can say that both shows were fantastic and everyone seemed to be having a great time.  The catering for both shows was superb, as always, provided by Ashley and Debbie Huggins of AJ Catering.  It was East Midlands 75th Anniversary show and they thoughtfully gave every exhibitor a commemorative pin badge.  The SBTC celebrated their 90th year.  Both Clubs offered excellent prizes and awards for all winners – class placings and main awards – and the raffle prizes were excellent.  A special mention must go to Jason Kirk – Show Manager for the SBTC – who, in his first year as Show Manager did an excellent job.  Unfortunately Jason was not at the show as he has recently undergone major surgery but I am sure you all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery and assuring him that his Team did a great job in delivering the show in his absence.

A quick update from Lesley McFadyen of East Anglia SBTC.  The Club will be holding their annual Christmas Party on Sunday 7th December at Moulton Village Hall, Bridge Street, Moulton, Newmarket, CB8 8SP.  The party starts at 12 midday and goes on until 3 pm and everyone is welcome.  This is always a great event so if you can, try and get along.

Lesley also informs me that the Club’s Winter magazine will be issued to all Members towards the end of November so look out for that – a great read on these long, winter nights!

I have also had an updated from Rhiannon Thomas – secretary of the Anglesey Canine Society.  The Society has been inactive for a few years but now they have a new committee in place who are looking to take up the reins again and re-invigorate the Society.  They are kicking off by organising a “Conformation and Movement” seminar and here is the update from Rhiannon to share with you all:

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Christina Chapman to the island on 22nd November, to present the Conformation and Movement Seminar, and the Points of the Dog Exam. Essential qualifications for up-and-coming judges, these can only be completed in person (not possible online!) and registering as a judge on the Kennel Club’s JEP must be completed before 31 December!

The Points of the Dog slots have already been filled but we are pleased to say we can accommodate a few more on the Conformation and Movement seminar ~ so be quick!

Also, anyone interested in doing the Points of the Dog exam can be put on the “reserve list” in case of any cancellations, though we can’t promise there would be any.

Anglesey is an easy run along the A55 for everyone living in the North-West and the new venue is mere minutes from the famous Britannia Bridge ~ so no excuse there!

Anyone wishing to register, please contact Hon Secretary Rhiannon Thomas on angleseysecretary@gmail.com as soon as possible please, and I can provide full details. The advert is also on the Anglesey CS Facebook page.

The venue is Canolfan Esceifiog (Centre), Gaerwen, Anglesey, LL60 6HS.

That’s about all for this week.  Have a great week and please let Steve or myself know of anything you would like us to share.  Take care!

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Notes w/c 3rd November 2025

Hello Again!  I hope you have all had a good week and the fireworks near you have not been too bad.  Unfortunately, they have been a nightmare by us and the dogs have been petrified.  Personally, I think the only fireworks for general sale should be noiseless ones – they are available, so why not just allow the big noisy fireworks at organised displays only?  Just my opinion, but I am sure many of you feel the same.

Moving on to some results now.  There were no Champ shows last weekend but the Scottish Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club held their Open Show on Saturday 1st November where Fran Schofield was judging.  There were 15 dogs and 15 bitches actually present and his main winners were:

BD & BIS – GEORDIESTOON DEFIANT BOY FOR WEORC JW 29.07.2024 (Ch Niatona Wreck It Ralph x Mournestaffs Lily’O).  Winner of Junior dog from an entry of 2.

RBD – RHEBELSTAFF HUNKY DORY 04.07.2023 (Ch Jackabyte Javikah x Ch Jackabyte Wonderlust At Rhebelstaff). Winner of Open Dog from 3.

BPD & BPIS – STAFFRANOS ESQUIRE 24.04.2025 (Fairlenium’s American Pie x Bella Bytynskiego Wzgorza Staffranos (IMP POL)).  Winner of Puppy Dog from 2.

BVD & BVIS – DIAMONDSTAFF JACK N’ BLACK 04.02.2016 (Kimstaff’s Harry Potter JW ShCM x Maiden Aberdeen Of Diamondstaff).  Winner of Veteran Dog from 2.

BB & RBIS – BETHALEESE’S ICE’N A’SLICE FOR SCOURGIE 04.10.2022 (Jackstaff Doppelganger x Bethaleese Ce La Vie).  Winner of Open Bitch from 2.

RBB - RHEBELSTAFF SWEET THING 04.07.2023 (Ch Jackabyte Javikah x Ch Jackabyte Wonderlust At Rhebelstaff).  Winner of Graduate Bitch from 6.

BPB – CROWSTAFF SEIZE THE DAY FOR WEORC 25.03.2025 (Ellchansha Charm The Devil At Moorstar JW x Ch Northstaff Bay Bomber For Crowstaff JW).  Winner of Minor Puppy Bitch from 2.

Well done all.

Also taking place on Saturday was Amman Valley Canine Society where Cameron Davis (Sharmara) was judging.  This show was held in a lovely big venue with good sized rings.  There were some lovely stalls and great catering facilities and a great atmosphere at ringside amongst the Stafford people.  The weather was mixed – alternating between stunning sunshine and torrential rain but all in all, it was a lovely day.  Cameron had an entry of 26 and from these his main winners were:

BOB – CH GAZSTAFF’S BLACK MAGIC 26.10.2018 (Ch Elitebulls Challenger JW x Cwmcalon Lady Million For Gazstaff).  Winner of Open from 6.

RBOB – MAYNESTAFF FANCY A CWTCH FOR AQUATOR 10.04.2024 (Ch Chiswelstaff Let’s Dance JW x Sugar’s Shadow).  Winner of Post Grad from 3.

Nothing in the Group for “Kenny” under Mark Marshall, but he did winner the AV Terrier Veteran Class, also judged by Mark.

Well done everyone.

Taking place on Sunday 2nd November was Liverpool Sporting Terrier where Dean Crawford (Crowstaff) was judging.  From the 15 dogs present, Dean’s main winners were:

BOB – SKYLAND TILIKUM 22.10.2024 (Ch Rochlawie Behold The Hour JW x Skyland Eruption).  Winner of Junior from 3.

RBOB – FERGIESTAFFS I AINT VANILLA 12.11.2022 (Ch Bellarouge Adonis At Fergiestaffs x Fergistaffs Hands Of Stone).  Winner of Open from 4.

BPIB – VALGLO TIGERLILY WITH STAFFMASTER 14.12.2024 (Scouter Rogue One JW x Valglo Back To Black). Winner of Puppy from 3.

Well done all.

This coming weekend sees the East Midlands – Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club double-header taking place at the Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh Park.  These shows are “milestone anniversary” shows for both Clubs – East Midlands celebrating their 75th anniversary and the SBTC celebrating their 90th anniversary.

East Midlands have announced their entry which is a fantastic 283 split between 100 making 110 dogs and 153 making 168 bitches.  I am sure Amelie Chaine (judging dogs) and Maureen Ward (judging bitches) are delighted with their entries.

East Midlands will also be hosting the prestigious Pup of the Year and Veteran of the Year, both of which will be judged by Bev Harrison during the lunchbreak of the actual show.  The Club have put on some superb prizes, awards, Specials and rosettes as well as a beautiful pin badge for every exhibitor commemorating their 75th anniversary.  The show opens at 8.30am and judging starts at 9.30am in each ring.  Good luck to everyone entered.

The SBTC have not yet announced their entry.  Their show opens at 8.00am on Sunday 9th November and judging commences “not before 9.30am” according to the schedule.  The judges are Lesley McFadyen (dogs) and Andy Dodsworth (bitches) and I hope you both have a super day, whatever your entry is.  Stafford of the Year is not being held this year but Parade of Champions will be taking place during the lunch break.  Good luck all.

The updated Breed Standard came into effect from Saturday 1st November 2025.  The updated version is as follows, as published on the Kennel Club website:

Smooth coated, well balanced, of great strength for his size. Muscular, active and agile.

Characteristics

Traditionally of indomitable courage and tenacity. Highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children.

Temperament

Short, deep through with broad skull. Very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, short foreface, with a minimum ratio of 1 part muzzle to 2 parts skull. Nose black or as dark as possible in blue dogs, with open nostrils.

Eyes

Dark preferred but may bear some relation to coat colour. Round, of medium size, and set to look straight ahead. Eye rims dark.

Ears

Rose or half pricked, not large or heavy. Full drop or pricked ears highly undesirable.

Mouth

Lips tight and clean. Jaws strong, teeth large, with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Neck

Muscular, rather short, clean in outline gradually widening towards shoulders.

Forequarters

Legs straight and well boned, set rather wide apart, showing no weakness at the pasterns, from which point feet turn out a little. Shoulders well laid back with no looseness at elbow.

Body

Close-coupled, with level topline, wide front, deep brisket, well-sprung ribs, being rather light in loin, muscular and well defined.

Coat

Smooth, short and close.

Colour

White. Red, fawn, black, blue, or any one of these colours with white. Any shade of brindle or any shade of brindle with white.

Any other colour, including black and tan or liver, or combination of colours unacceptable.

Size

Desirable height at withers 36-41 cms (14 to 16 ins), these heights being related to the weights. Weight: dogs: 13-17 kgs (28-38 lbs); bitches 11-15.4 kgs (24¼-34 lbs).

Faults

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Note

Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

It is worth noting and reminding everyone that Staffords are currently listed on Breed Watch as Category 2 and the points of concern for special attention by judges are:

Signs of respiratory difficulty or distress (laboured or rapid breathing, excessive respiratory effort, respiratory noise)

Misplaced canine teeth

Breed Watch serves as an 'early warning system' to protect the health and welfare of show dogs. It raises awareness of specific concerns, helps judges prioritise health and welfare in their decisions, and collects vital data to monitor and address visible health issues effectively.

The points for concern and special attention as listed above are potential health and welfare issues and should be prioritised as such, not just considered in the same way as any other “fault” or deviation from the Breed Standard and as judges, we ALL need to be taking these matters very seriously, regardless of what level we are judging at.

Well, that’s about it for this week, if any of you have any news to share, please contact myself or Steve at the email addresses below.

Have a great week and catch up again next week.

SBT Breed Notes w/c 27th October 2025.

It’s been a while!  I hope you are well and enjoyed the lovely summer we had while I was taking a break from much of the SBT world.  I am sure most of you have felt at times that you have had enough and just want to close the door on certain people and situations and earlier this year, that is very much how I felt.  So, for my own wellbeing, I felt I had to take a step back from many things, including my weekly commitment to the Breed Notes.  But over the last few months, many of you have told me how much you miss the weekly updates and, thanks to all of the support I have had from many of the wonderful people in our Breed, I am feeling much more positive and ready to start to pick up the reins again in many ways and draw a line under the upset that I, and several of my closest SBT friends, have suffered through the actions of just a very small number of individuals in our Breed.  Our Breed, and the dog world in general, does not need these people so let us move forward, rise above and don’t allow these individuals to win and stop us doing what we love.  Thank you to each and every one of you who has given me support over recent months – you know who you are and I am truly humbled by all of you.

Last weekend, Saturday 25th October, saw Midland Counties take place at Stafford County Showground where Alan Small (Bethane) was judging.  Alan had an entry of 63 dogs and 90 bitches totalling 153 exhibits making an entry of 166.  It was quite a long day, with judging taking almost 7 hours by which time the building had emptied of all other breeds and exhibitors, except for the hard-core Stafford people!  It was very cold by the end despite the day having been fine and dry.  Alan’s main winners were as follows:

DCC & BOB – KAMARISTAFFS ROYAL RUMOUR JW 27.06.2022 – Ch Elitebulls Challenger JW x Ch Chiswelstaff Black Velvet At Kamaristaff JW.  Winner of Open Dog from an entry of 12.  No Group placing under judge, Albert Wright.

BSpBeB & BSpBeIB – SIKAISTAFF LIL MONSTER AT KAMIFLO JW 17.01.2024 – Jasamarch Celtic Lad x Sikaistaff Fire Within. Winner of Special Beginners Bitch from 5 entries with 4 present.  No Group placing under judge, Patsy Hollings.

Well done all.

On Sunday 26th October North West SBTC held their Open Show where Faye Gardner (Labrastaf) was judging.  The weather was not kind, being cold and wet throughout but the welcome was warm from the Committee and the show was well attended.  It was a bit chilly in the room but the coffee was hot, so we survived – despite there being a few issues with the power in the kitchen.  But the Committee rallied well and none of us went hungry!  Some lovely hampers were up for grabs on the raffle – none of which Spencer Cox managed to win (or steal!!).

Faye had 60 exhibits making 31 dog entries and 32 bitch entries making 63 entries in total.  There were 16 absentees and Faye’s winners from the 44 exhibits present were as follows:

Well done everyone.

Some changes of Officers at the Breed Council since my last Breed Notes.  Helen Reaney has decided to step away from her role as Secretary after many years of dedicated service in various roles.  I am sure we are all very grateful to Helen for everything she has done and though I would like to say “put your feet up and relax”, I know Helen well enough to know that she has no intention of taking things easy!  So I’ll just say, “carry on enjoying all of the other things you do – thank you”.

At the last Breed Council meeting a few weeks ago, the position of Acting Secretary went to Sian Hammond.  Welcome Sian and I am sure you will do a fantastic job and I wish you all the very best as I am sure we all do.

The Public Relations Officer role, which I previously held but felt unable to continue with earlier in the year for the reasons mentioned above, is now being fulfilled by Steve Bainborough.  Furthermore, Steve will be joining the Our Dogs Breed Notes team.  Steve and I will be working on the Breed Notes between us for a while so, if any of you have anything to share, please drop an email to either Steve or myself and we will be happy to include in the Breed Notes.  This could be show results from shows you have attended or other results or achievements you have had with your Stafford even if it’s completely unrelated to dog showing.  If your  Club is organising an event – either a show, a seminar, a fun day or anything else that Staffords can be involved in – please drop an email to either/both of us.

That’s about all for this week.  There are no Champ shows this coming weekend but if you are attending any other shows or events, please let us know.  Whatever you are doing, have a great week and catch up again next week.
