City Of Birmingham 2025
Sarah Hemstock
Judge: Dr S. L. Hemstock
My sincere thanks to the City of Birmingham Canine Association for the invitation to judge and for their excellent organisation and warm hospitality throughout the day. I would also like to extend my particular thanks to my stewards, Tony and Cathy Jenkins, whose efficiency, professionalism and good humour ensured the day ran smoothly and were very much appreciated.
In terms of general observations, there were several encouraging trends within the entry. I was pleased to see only a small number of faulty mouths, very few exhibits showing sickle hocks, and a high proportion of dogs moving soundly with legs parallel when viewed from front or rear. Movement overall was a strength, with very few dogs moving close behind, which was gratifying to see. I was also pleased with the depth of quality in many classes, and all my placings had good qualities.
That said, we have to take the rough with the smooth, and there are areas of concern which I feel should be highlighted. Narrow fronts were evident in a number of exhibits, often accompanied by a shelly outline with insufficient depth of brisket, along with a general lack of substance and bone in some cases. This is particularly worrying trend in a breed where strength, power and width are fundamental. The Bulldog and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are the only breeds traditionally shown front-on to the judge, specifically because a wide, well boned front is a defining characteristic of each individual breed. The clues are in the SBT breed standard… Forequarters: Legs straight and well boned, set rather wide apart… Body: … wide front, deep brisket… When the width of the front is the same, or a little more than the width of the head, this is a serious deviation from the Breed Standard and does not represent the blend of Bull and Terrier ideally required. Narrow fronts tended to be accompanied by forward or inward facing forefeet – not turning slightly outwards as described by the Breed Standard.
Equally concerning were fronts where the forelegs appeared to come from underneath the brisket rather than being correctly placed at each corner of the dog. A Stafford should give the impression of a leg at every corner, not of the front legs emerging too close together — or, as my friend Sue aptly puts it, “as though both front legs are coming out of the same hole.” This construction detracts from both the strength and stability required and should be guarded against.
In view of these construction faults, I have used the term “stable base” in my critiques to refer to the security and efficiency with which a dog is correctly supported on its legs and feet, both when standing and when moving. It is shorthand for correct construction, allowing strength to be carried and used effectively, as required by the Breed Standard.
I also noted small, rectangular nostrils, often accompanied by short muzzles, which is undesirable and contrary to correct breed type.
These points are raised constructively and with the future of the breed in mind, in the hope that emphasis will continue to be placed on correct construction, soundness and true Staffordshire Bull Terrier type.

Excellent head, masculine and well-chiselled, with a dark eye and superb expression set off by neat rose ears. Correct short, muscular neck flowing into well-laid shoulders. Forequarters correctly proportioned, legs straight and well boned with feet turning out as they should, giving him a powerful and stable base. Compact, close-coupled body with ample width, rib and depth of brisket. Strong, well-defined hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Balanced angulations front and rear produced sound, parallel movement with strength, purpose and complete economy of effort, which won him the CC.
